Groundhog Day Movie Gets a Sequel.. in Virtual Reality

26 years ago Groundhog Day went from an obscure holiday, to a popular holiday movie that gets played on cable during Groundhog Day marathons and gets associated with doing the day over and over and over again.

People have wondered if the movie would ever get any kind of sequel associated with it and as Bill Murray grows older it seemed less and less likely. Now with today’s announcement, we are getting a sequel, it’s just not what you expected.

Today Sony Pictures, publisher MWM Immersive, and developer Tequila Works announced a new VR game for the PSVR, Oculus, and Vive that is a sequel titled Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son.

In the game you play as Phil Connors, Jr. who has gone back home to Punxsutawney and is now experiencing the same day loop like his dad like. He will be stuck remaining in the loop until he “learns the true value of friends and family.”

On the Playstation blog, the game promises multiple branching narratives with the time loop mechanic with over 8 hours of story. James Siciliano from Rick and Morty and Joshua Rubin of Telltale Games helped build the overall story.

Right now the game does not have an official release date set yet other than “sometime this year”.

It’s interesting to see where Virtual Reality is going as industry as it’s still trying to find it’s niche in gaming. With Hollywood entering the foray and creating immersive environments for stories without spending it on a new movie, I wonder if this could be another medium for these kinds of projects that never properly get a follow up story.

Firefly next please.
